One of the most effective ways to change the cost of an attendee's registration is to apply a discount or a surcharge. A discount will decrease the cost of registration, while a surcharge will increase the cost of registration.

We recommend using discounts and surcharges instead of the 'admin price override', as the cost of registration will automatically update if the attendee adds/removes items from their registration.

The first step is creating the discount or surcharge in your event. Once created, you can then edit the registration and apply the discount/surcharge.

Adding a surcharge

These steps will help you create a surcharge that applies to the grand total cost of registration. The surcharge will be triggered by adding the code to the registration as an admin:

  1. Go to Setup > Finance > Discounts

  2. Click "Add" to create a new surcharge and give it a name

  3. Select "Grand Totals" for 'Discount Applies To'

  4. Select "Code" as the 'Discount Type'

  5. Enter the code name to trigger the surcharge on the right

  6. In the "Discount(-)/Surcharge(+):" field, enter the surcharge amount as a positive value (example: 100.00 for a $100 surcharge)

  7. In the 'Date from:' field, enter the date the attendee registered or prior

  8. Click "Save"

Adding a discount

These steps will help you create a discount that applies to the grand total cost of registration. The discount will be triggered by adding the code to the registration as an admin:

  1. Go to Setup > Finance > Discounts

  2. Click "Add" to create a new discount and give it a name

  3. Select "Grand Totals" for 'Discount Applies To'

  4. Select "Code" as the 'Discount Type'

  5. Enter the code name to trigger the discount on the right

  6. In the "Discount(-)/Surcharge(+):" field, enter the discount amount as a negative value (example: -100.00 for a $100 discount)

  7. In the 'Date from:' field, enter the date the attendee registered or prior

  8. Click "Save"

Applying the discount/surcharge to a registration

These steps will help you apply the surcharge or discount to the registration. The steps are specific to the examples above where the discount/surcharge applies to "grand totals":

  1. Go to People > Registrations

  2. Click to 'Edit' the registration which the discount/surcharge should be applied to

  3. Enter the code in the "Promotional code" box

  4. Click "Update"

  5. Click "Complete Registration" to finalize your changes

Note: If you do not select "Complete Registration", the updated price will not be saved.
