Marketing or referrer codes can be used to identify how many registrations are generated from a particular source. Codes might be sent to individuals or promoted through social media channels. Each time someone registers to attend an event, the marketing code is saved against the record and can be included in reports.
The benefit of using codes with Eventsforce is that they do not need to be created within Eventsforce. This means that any member of yours or a colleague's team can generate codes without logging into Eventsforce.
Note: Marketing codes cannot be used with personal links.
Using Marketing Codes
Once the code or list of codes has been generated, which might be by a sales or marketing team, the code simply needs to be added to the end of the event URL.
An event or marketing manager might want to know how many registrations were generated from, a corporate website, social media or telemarketing channel. Each channel could have its own code for the same event.
Example
If the normal event URL for the home page is:
To make Eventsforce store a marketing code, "?mc=(code)" needs to be appended to the URL with the code after the "=". For instance:
Corporate website example
Social media example
Telemarketing example
When someone registers using one of the URLs above, Eventsforce will save the code "team567" against the person in the database. The code can then be included in a report.
The marketing code, "?mc=(code)", can be used with any event URL found on the Website > Settings > Addresses page. The marketing code is case sensitive so it must be entered exactly as it appears in this article.
If an attendee requests new login details the marketing code will still be valid
If the marketing code needs to be changed, an admin user can edit it in the personID panel
Reporting
To know at a glance which marketing activity is driving the best results, a report can be created listing the usage of the marketing codes. You can create a report following the steps below:
Go to Reports > Reports
Click the "+" button to create a new report
Select "Attendees" as your data source
Click "Next"
Add a filter as follows: "In event" > "is equal to" > (select your event)
Click "Next" until you reach the 'Columns' area of the report builder
Select personal data from the First Column and then select any other columns you wish to report on. One column should be 'Marketing Code'
Click "Next"
Name the report
Click "Save"
To be able to use Search & Reports > Search to find the Marketing Code you will need to add the database item "Marketing Code" to the registration page as an 'Admin portal only' question.
If a registration contact logs into the event website using the event URL with a different marketing code to make changes to their registration, the original marketing code with remain as the code associated with their registration.
The event administrator can overwrite the code, if necessary, by editing the personID in the admin portal.
Marketing codes with multilingual websites
It is possible to use tracking marketing/referrer codes using multilingual URLs.
Example
If the normal event URL for an alternative language is:
To make Eventsforce store a marketing code, "?mc=(code)" needs to be appended to the URL. For instance:
